I’m well aware that having a curriculum for my 2 (almost 3) year old is a recipe for disaster in our house! I have too strong a desire to check boxes and always follow the plan that I easily get frustrated when things do not run smoothly. Magoo has this unique ability to know exactly what I want him to do and refuse. So my goals this year are more for me, for they way I want to parent and the things I want to introduce. The big goal is to provide an environment that allows Magoo to play and learn in a constructive way. To be a little more specific I’ve picked three concrete goals for the year.
Develop Self Care Independence – I would really like to see Magoo able to dress and undress himself, make his bed and go to the bathroom independently. Right now it is much easier and faster to just do it for him instead of taking the time to coach him through doing it on his own. I find that I really have to be intentional about having him do the work. To facilitate this change from the current way we do things, I will have at least one planned out practical life exercise every school day, which is usually 4 times a week.
Obedience – I’m not really sure how this is a goal exactly. Magoo is a two year old and acts in completely age appropriate two year old ways. I want to get to the point where I can ask him to do something (a task that he is able to do) and actually have him do it the first time. We’ve used our We Choose Virtues Parenting Cards off and on to talk about various character issues, but not consistently. I plan to use the obedience card with Magoo until he at least knows the definition of obedience (and hopefully a change in behavior will follow).
Alphabet Exposure – Magoo is very interested in learning the alphabet. BUT he is also a 2 year old, so expecting him to master the letters and their sounds in the next year is a little unreasonable. I plan to introduce the letters one at a time in a letter of the week style, although is more likely to be a letter every two weeks. We will also be working on various developmental skills in a Montessori inspired style as Magoo is interested. The goal with his school work is the same as last year, keep him out of trouble.
